So you’ve picked up a paddle, grabbed a few balls, and finally stepped onto the court. Welcome to the fast-growing world of pickleball! It’s addictive, social, and actually super fun! But like every new sport, the early days come with a few blur moments.
Here are 5 common beginner mistakes in pickleball... and how to avoid them so you can level up your game faster (and with less paiseh moments).

1. Charging Into the Kitchen Too Soon
The Mistake: You rush to the non-volley zone (also called “The Kitchen”) and end up getting caught in an awkward position.
How to Avoid It: Wait until your shot gives you the chance to safely approach. Don’t forget!! No volleys allowed in the kitchen, so time your steps and stay alert.
2. Smashing Every Ball Like It's Tennis
The Mistake: You’re trying to hit winners every time, especially on high balls. End up hitting out, or worse… into the net.
How to Avoid It: Pickleball rewards patience. Learn the art of the dink shot~ those soft, controlled shots that land just over the net. Control wins rallies.
3. Forgetting the Double Bounce Rule
The Mistake: You volley the ball straight after the serve.. Oops, that’s a fault.
How to Avoid It: Remember this: after the serve, both teams must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed. It’s the double bounce rule. Super important for fair play!
4. Playing With the Wrong Paddle
The Mistake: You borrowed any random paddle and it just doesn’t feel right... Too heavy, too slippery, no control.
How to Avoid It: Get a beginner-friendly paddle with good grip and control. Our House of Tembusu paddles are designed just nice for new players - not too heavy, not too stiff. Plus, the designs? Confirm got style.

5. Not Calling Out the Score (or Calling It Wrong)
The Mistake: “Er... 2-1-what ah?” You mumble the score and confuse everyone.
How to Avoid It: Always call the score before serving! It’s part of the rules. It goes: your team’s score - opponent’s score - server number (1 or 2). Practice makes perfect!
Final Word: Mistakes Are Part of the Game
Every pro started as a blur beginner. What matters most is stepping onto the court, trying your best, and learning as you go. Miss a shot? Laugh it off. Win a point? Celebrate with your buddy.
At House of Tembusu, we believe pickleball is for everyone brave enough to try. That includes you.
